College Seen Photo Contest

Dear California Community College Faculty, Staff, and Students,

We are pleased to announce the Fifth Annual College Seen™ Photo Contest for California Community College students, sponsored by the Foundation for California Community Colleges, the CollegeBuys™ purchasing program, Adobe®, and lynda.com. The contest showcases and recognizes outstanding Community College student work and invites students to look around, pick up their cameras, and capture the scenes that make each college unique.

Submissions will be accepted online from April 4—June 30, 2011.

Students may enter up to eight photos, one per category, for an opportunity to win:

* A $500 cash award
* Adobe® Creative Suite® 5, Design Premium
* lynda.com online software training subscription
* Wacom Intuos Small pen tablet
* OnOne Perfect Photo Suite (Photoshop plug-in)
* Feature story in Affinity, the magazine for California Community Colleges

Eight First Place winners, including one Grand Prize winner, will be selected.

Fotorama - LB Aquarium, Tuttle Camera and Nikon

Fotorama

The Aquarium of the Pacific, along with Nikon and Tuttle Cameras, is offering an incredible opportunity for photography enthusiasts to have full access to bring their gear and shoot to their hearts content. Never before has the Aquarium been closed to everyday visitors and open to photographers during the day. From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., it will only be you and like-minded photographers all looking to get their idea of the perfect Aquarium photos. Take a break in the middle of the day with your included boxed lunch and refreshment. Add a workshop or class to expand your skills and then try them out in the Aquarium.

Unique opportunities, for example:
  • Bring in all your gear and set up your tripods and that experimental lighting set-up you’ve always dreamed of
  • Set up in the Seal and Sea Lions amphitheater and shoot during one of their feedings
  • Feed the lorikeets and then take some of the most colorful photos of your day in Lorikeet Forest
  • Get up close to some of our program animals with our husbandry staff (animals to be determined)
Nikon

Nikon will be offering free lenses and bodies that will be available for check out with a valid driver's license. You can basically show up with a memory card and pick out your dream Nikon/Nikkor set up and shoot to your heart’s content. Then when you want to switch it up, come back and try that lens that’s calling out your name. Additionally, they will be offering a couple of classes and workshops for an additional fee.

Tuttle Cameras

Tuttle Cameras will have limited items for sale, such as memory cards, rubber lends hoods, and other small items.

Classes & Workshops
  • Creative Lighting Systems Workshop with Paul Van Allen.
    • Paul will give you a short overview of the menus and buttons for wireless flash and other flash settings. After a short presentation, he'll discuss some of the processes and technologies involved in creating staged still-life type images. You will then use your Nikon camera to re-create some of the same images in hands-on lighting stations.
  • Nikkor Lenses: Focus on Your Vision
    • You will learn all about choosing the right lenses and settings for different scenarios, from macro to zoom. Take what you learn in this class and shoot in the Aquarium the rest of the day with your new knowledge. Don't forget that you can borrow free lenses during the event so you can experiment with the information you've just been given!
Customize your package:
  • $50 admission includes all-day shooting, boxed lunch, and a drink.
  • $10 parking. Carpooling is highly recommended as parking will be very limited. Once parking sells out, you will have to arrange transportation as parking will not be available for purchase in the area. Member parking cards will not be valid during Fotorama as you will not be parking in the normal structure. If you will be driving down, you need to purchase parking.
  • $15 Creative Lighting Systems Workshop
  • $15 Nikkor Lenses Class

Which you can buy. Only $10! On that evening! With your name in it and everything!

Proceeds from the book go to a charity for kids learning photography (Snapshop).

That's right - your future competitors.

Show your character and photos anyway. We'll present them whether you win or not.

Plus pizza and beer (and veggies, fruit, sodas, wine, and like-that-there, too).

The slideshow is open to ALL. Come even even if you don't submit photos.

But, really....You got a phone, right? They all come with cameras, right?

SIZE: 1,200 pixels minimum on the short side.

COLOR SPACE: sRGB

FILE TYPE: JPG

RESOLUTION: Don't worry about it! Whatever!

You are going to name each file like this:

FirstName_LastName_1, FirstName_LastName_2, FirstName_LastName_3

You get the idea.

“Plastic Perception” a toy camera photography contest


Long Beach City College presents “Plastic Perception” a toy camera photography contest.

“Photographing with simple plastic lens, these low-tech devices came to be popular with photographers, Plastic cameras, such as the original Diana and Holga appeal to a wide range of people. To some, they are a novelty; a cheap toy to play with. For many veteran photographers, they are a breath of fresh vision, allowing lightness and joy back into tired eyes.” – Michelle Bates, Toying with Creativity.


To enter contest use drop off-boxes at both Long Beach City College campuses, K119 at LAC Campus and OO3 at PCC Campus and fill out entry form.

Winners will be announced Friday April 1st 2011, at 6pm at Artist Reception held at The EXPO Building 4321 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach CA 90807.

Prizes include: Lomography Diana Deluxe set and other cash prizes. Judges for this plastic event are Craig Havens and David Daigle.

This event is open to the public.

To Enter:
Use drop off-box located at each campus’s photo lab
3 entries per person, Mat all entries (required)
Please include name, type of toy camera and title of work
Last day to enter is Wednesday March 30, at Noon.
